Do Large Estates Benefit Smallholder Neighbours? Evidence from Malawi

چکیده
We examine spillovers from agricultural estates to Malawian smallholders within an econometric counterfactual framework. consider economic such as income, well agrarian yields, harvests, and crop diversity. identify long-run effects of large investments on small-scale farmers. For the location estates, we use a novel OpenStreetMap dataset, while data smallholder’s stems household survey. provide evidence for importance distance threshold spillovers, explore multiple thresholds. In proximity find higher groundnut pigeon pea yields increased very close proximity, incomes are also higher. Area under cultivation in total maize smaller nearby households, not significantly different. Overall, our results suggest that policies should aim leverage diversity mitigating potential detrimental arising reduced cultivated land.

Do Community-Based Interventions Improve Risk Sharing? Evidence from Malawi
We study whether community based interventions improve risk sharing in rural Malawi. We focus on improvements in risk sharing arising as a result of design features of these interventions. We use a 2 year panel dataset collected within a cluster randomised trial to investigate whether two community based interventions a participatory women’s group intervention and a home-based infant feeding in...
متن کاملdo large preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome benefit from early surfactant?
large preterm infants are generally not considered good candidates for surfactant treatment until they have been intubated for progressing respiratory distress. this study has been done to detect the effect of electively providing early single-dose surfactant to large preterm babies with mild to moderate respiratory distress syndrome (rds). a randomized clinical trial was performed on 45 infant...
متن کاملPseudo-Likelihood Inference Underestimates Model Uncertainty: Evidence from Bayesian Nearest Neighbours
When using the K-nearest neighbours (KNN) method, one often ignores the uncertainty in the choice of K. To account for such uncertainty, Bayesian KNN (BKNN) has been proposed and studied (Holmes and Adams 2002 Cucala et al. 2009). We present some evidence to show that the pseudo-likelihood approach for BKNN, even after being corrected by Cucala et al. (2009), still significantly underest...

Everybody Needs Good Neighbours? Evidence from Students’ Outcomes in England We estimate the effect of neighbours’ characteristics and prior achievements on teenage students’ educational and behavioural outcomes using census data on several cohorts of secondary school students in England. Our research design is based on changes in neighbourhood composition caused explicitly by residential migra...
